Historic Stone Wall Rebuild!

The Milton Cemetery is seeking Participants to assist in the rebuild and renovation of a historic dry laid stone wall on the Cemetery property. The original wall was built as a border marker between what was then the property line of the Cemetery and a private landowner. In recent years the Cemetery acquired the adjacent property, which is currently wooded and overgrown. As a result of this overgrowth, age and the natural buildup of compost along its sides, the border wall is currently in a severe state of disrepair.

The long term plan for this acquired parcel of land is to create a meditation garden with a meandering walking path through it. The wall, which was originally built as a border wall between two landowners, will again act as a border of sorts to enclose the mediation garden and create a more inviting space.

The Project will require the participation of 12 individuals who are interested in dry laid stone wall work and are willing to make a time commitment and a donation to the Cemetery Gift Fund to support the ongoing beautification of the Cemetery.

The work is physically demanding and the time commitment will be structured as two days of instruction/hands on training with at least two additional days of building. The instruction will take place on Saturdays in September and October but the building schedule will have more flexibility to accommodate individual schedules.

The Project Leader is Michael Papile, a Milton resident. He has obtained Level II – Intermediate Certification by the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (“DSWA of GB”) and is a Certified Stone Trust Instructor by the DSWA of GB. He is also a Professional Member of The Stone Trust, Dummerston, VT and an Overseas Member of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

He will be assisted throughout the Project by other Instructors certified by the DSWA of GB.

Many thanks to our corporate sponsors listed above for their support of this project!

Cost: $250 suggested donation per Participant to the Milton Cemetery Gift Fund
Time Commitment: 2 full days of instruction/hands on training plus 2 full days of building
Benefits: All participants will learn the basic skills needed to construct a dry laid stone wall. In addition they will receive a Basic Membership to the Stone Trust and of course a very cool T-Shirt.
